Student Loans

A student loan is a unique type of loan designed to help students pay for their university tuition fees, books, and living expenses. This differs from other types of loans in that the interest rate may be substantially lower and the repayment schedule may be deferred while the student is still in education. Student loans vary in many countries in the strict laws regulating renegotiating and bankruptcy in those countries.

Examples of student loans in Kenya

  • KCB Masomo Loan, the first of its kind in Kenya, is the product of a partnership between the bank and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) targeting those pursuing undergraduate and post graduate studies in accredited universities in Kenya. It is aimed to enable working class students undertaking graduate courses in all private and public universities, the product will enable them borrow up to KS 300,000.
  • The Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) of Kenya was established on July 21, 1995 through the Kenya Gazette Supplement to help undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate Kenyan students continue their educations. Loans are offered to students who are unable to finance their schooling
  • Banks avail loans to assist students or parents to pay for education. The loans are not a preserve of the SACCO but are also available in the banks. Apart from the school fee schemes by the banks, the banks are becoming more innovative and are partnering with education institutions to avail the loans. 7. What are we talking about here. We’re trying to help a kenyan Computer Science student who cannot fully pay the University fee leave alone buying a laptop to help put to practice stuff taught in class. Based on the comments and all the stuff you guys are posting, I dont see how they are going to help this kind of person to have a smooth life during his/her studies.
The HELB Loan that is currently being offered by the Kenyan government to needy but bright students is getting more and more unhelpful and insufficient to the students who we also expect to have some fun beside their studies. This is due to the increased cost of living and the fact that the HELB Management is continuosly reducing the amount it disburses to the fresh students accounts year by year.
The new students of all Universities of Kenya who are government sponsored now recieve a mere 35,000Kshs ($388.8) per year. It disbursed in halfs into their accounts each semester.
This is so annoying and the main reason why a secondary source of money is necessary.
